The Head Fake – The Value of a life long lesson.

At the age of 14 I took a great interest in playing basketball at a local park where every day 20 plus boys would show up, pick teams of 3 and play until darkness came. I quickly learned that I was “late to the game”. I did not have the skills to compete and thus was always one of the last to be picked on to a team.

Fortunately, a good friend of mine who was one of the better players noticed how I struggled on the court. “You know you don’t shoot well, so your best chance of scoring is from underneath the basket, and I’ll show you how to get there.” When the park emptied, he began his private coaching lessons. He explained that my best chance at getting a basket was to have a quick move to the backboard.

He then began to demonstrate the head fake. “Stand 10 feet from the basket, take a small step and bob your head left, then simultaneously push off your left foot and move to the right for an easy layup.” It didn’t take long to get that head fake move down, and to start getting the ball through the hoop! I walked home that day with a good boost to my confidence.

Weeks passed, and I quickly added new variations to that move and kept defenders off balance. In a matter of a few weeks, I went from being uncoordinated and unwanted to a high scorer with an arsenal of moves.

Many years have passed since that time and I continued to play, joining recreational leagues, and occasionally stopping at a park where some heavy competition where players half my age played. I had no trouble being competitive and always recalled my good friend who made it possible for me to hear “hey, you’ve got some nice moves!”
